'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Ethan Galbraith renews contest with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith grins broadly as he remembers the dramatic dying seconds of his team's epic comeback win against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. That match ended with Galbraith briefly donning a spectator's eyewear following the post-goal scrum.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith rattled the woodwork with a powerful effort from outside the box, and Cameron Burgess immediately converted the rebound before racing off toward the crowd to revel in the moment, with fans congregating around the players.

Extraordinary Turnaround

The result capped an unbelievable comeback given the Welsh side had been behind 2-0 deep into the final 45 minutes. During the delirium, there was some unintended consequences. The midfielder recalled, "There was a supporter shouting out and we were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we noticed the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as athletes but we're individuals, too, so to have a laugh with the fans is always good."

Premier League Giants

The result earned a next round game at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, opponents Galbraith ran close at the same stage of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. The athletic midfielder had a prime vantage point when Orient took the lead in stunning style, with Jamie Donley's long-range effort from about 45 yards going in via the crossbar and the City goalkeeper. It feels criminal that it was credited as an own goal.

"You would have hoped they would've given it to him for taking the effort on from that far out," commented Galbraith, who began the game centrally before switching to right wing-back after the team changed tactics. That meant facing off against Jack Grealish, with whom he swapped shirts, and the attacker was among the City players who praised the way his former team attacked the game.

City's Quality

"Athletically they are exceptional but even the basics and routine actions, they can just do it over and over again," he explains. "It feels like they complete every delivery and they understand how to manage and take the sting out of a game. You can feel you're all right and then without warning they will just thread a ball past your midfield without you even noticing. You have to be focused every second of the game. It takes a tough attitude and concentration just to remain competitive."

Welsh Transition

Swansea pushed to sign Galbraith in January and secured his signature to sign him in the summer in a seven-figure transfer. He established himself as a fans' favourite across two seasons at Orient and has swiftly replicated that in south Wales. At Orient he linked up again with his former manager, who previously gave Galbraith his debut prolonged spell in professional games on loan at a League One side from United. Then came a loan at lower division the Manchester club, before he permanently left Old Trafford.

Development Path

"I was perhaps a slightly green going into professional soccer. I think many athletes would say development squad matches is very different. Sometimes it seems play is circulated without real physicality. You see few physical contests. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adapt rapidly."

National Team Success

He has demonstrated that development for club and country, performing well for his national side, who remain in contention for the World Cup next summer via the playoffs and for whom he has featured in the past five games, including home and away fixtures against a football powerhouse. The ex-coach, Galbraith's former international manager, offered the supreme accolade, saying he was Northern Ireland's "creative maestro" given how he manipulates the ball and his ability to spot a killer pass.

Humble Beginnings

This marks a remarkable path for the youngster from the Queens Park estate in his hometown, just outside Belfast, who was raised observing his parent, his father, also a midfielder, play for a local club.

Red Devils Debut

The player's only game for Manchester United came in Kazakhstan in 2019, a continental tournament trip to Astana, where they featured on an artificial pitch and the stadium roof was shut owing to conditions of bitter cold. "It was a long trip and it was chilly," he recalls, chuckling. "The week before, the academy prospects practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to join the main group and make an appearance at the end was incredible."

Departing Old Trafford

How difficult was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he joined from Linfield aged 16? "It was quite easy, because I reached the point where I understood I wouldn't break through at first-team level. I'm extremely thankful for the time I spent there but it became apparent where I believed I needed to go my own route, join a smaller club and play men's football. Now I'm slowly working my way back up."

New Environment

This occurs during the early part of the afternoon at Swansea's Fairwood training base but Galbraith has an appointment at the early evening: a road rules assessment, another step towards getting on the road. Prior to relocating to the local area, the 24-year-old was a frequent passenger in Swansea's nicknamed player transport, a minibus driven by club employees, the transport team, which shuttles players to and from practice and games.

"It's myself the Portuguese player, the Brazilian, an Ivorian player – a former passenger used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's pleasant to spend time with the lads but I'm planning to be the following person to stop using the bus and behind the wheel. The Portuguese player is known for his humor; he's frequently playing tricks."

Supporter Connections

When he represented Leyton Orient, Galbraith would mix with followers on the Tube after beginning his trip at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
