The former Brazilian president arrested after being considered a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
