Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
